One of the things we most love about custom jewellery is the fact that there are so many choices for consumers to consider. This is true even with tension engagement rings, a setting choice that many people are surprised to learn has multiple variations. Just as with more traditional settings, there are several different tension styles that speak to individuals based on their personalities and preferences.
There are four primary tension styles custom jewellery makers work with – traditional, bar, twist and contoured twist. We will look at each one in more detail here. Keep in mind that all four styles are based on showing as much of the stone as possible without sacrificing the strength of the setting.
Traditional Tension Setting
The traditional tension setting can best be described by saying it begins with a standard band that is cut at the top and gently spread apart wide enough to hold the stone. Because the metal is prone to returning to its original state, it is under tension the entire time it is spread apart. This tension is that which holds the stone in place.
People who appreciate this traditional tension setting love the fact that it allows the maximum amount of light to pass through the gemstone. And where you have light, you have brilliance. This particular setting is still the most popular for tension engagement rings.
This setting is similar to the traditional setting but with one major difference: the two ends of the band are cast with vertical bars that arise at the top. The bars provide a more definitive setting for the gemstone. The maximum amount of light is still allowed through, but the raised feature of the bar setting adds additional depth and character to the piece. A well-crafted bar setting is a truly elegant and stylish host for any gemstone.
It can be very difficult to describe the twist setting to someone who has not seen it before. If you are one of those people, imagine the piece of metal used to make a key ring. That metal is twisted around a cylinder two or three times in order to provide a solid ring with plenty of tension to hold its form and keep your keys secure. The twist setting for custom ring making is very similar.
Rather than having a band cut at the top and spread apart, the twist setting consists of a band whose two ends overlap at the top. Tension is created by spreading the sides apart rather than the ends. This setting allows for multiple gemstones, where the traditional and bar settings can only accommodate a single stone.
Contoured Twist Setting
Our final setting is a cross between the traditional, bar, the twist settings. The jeweller starts with the concept of a traditional band cut at the top but, instead of merely spreading it apart at that point, the two ends of the band are twisted up and away from the base. This setting provides for the elevated presentation of the bar setting but with the stylish design of the twist. You may have to see an example to appreciate its beauty fully.
