In the town of Gretna, Louisiana there is a young mother very happy to have her engagement and wedding rings back. In fact, she is not even all that upset that it cost her $560 to retrieve them. They are that special. Her rings, which we will talk about more in a minute, were so valuable that she was willing to spend whatever amount of money was necessary to get them back. Her story caused us to wonder something about diamond wedding rings: how far would the average person go to rescue them if lost?
There is no way to say with absolute certainty. However, the story of Gretna’s Emily Cox Callegan shows how valuable some rings are. It turns out that Callegan’s three-year-old son found his mother’s engagement and wedding rings in the bathroom and, as young children are apt to do, thought it might be interesting to see how well they flushed down the toilet. Mom did not notice them missing until the next morning.
Callegan called a local company who arrived, with cameras in tow, to see if they could help. When they failed, they called a local plumber who specializes in finding lost jewellery in household plumbing. After digging in the yard and cutting into underground pipes, both rings were found and saved. Callegan is just grateful to have them back.
It is possible that some diamond wedding rings are worth going to great lengths to retrieve because of how much they cost. Nevertheless, if we were to hazard a guess, we believe most of the time it is about sentimental attachments. At least it was in Callegan’s case. News reports say that one of the rings was a 1929 heirloom once owned by her great-grandmother. She was horrified to think that such an important piece of jewellery might be lost forever. However, the ring has even greater significance.
Callegan’s home was apparently burglarized at some time in the past. Her two rings were all the jewellery she had left. They are important to her because they are part of who she is. We suspect many other people feel the same way about their rings.
Because diamond wedding rings can be so valuable, we recommend a couple of things you can do to protect yours:
- Storage – If you are planning to store a valuable ring at home for any length of time, we recommend you not leave it in the master bedroom. Why? Because the master bedroom is the first place burglars go to find valuables. Instead, hide it in one of the rooms deepest in the interior of your home. Burglars avoid these rooms.
- Safe Deposit – If there is no good place at home to store a valuable ring, it might be worth it for you to rent a safe deposit box down at your local bank. A safe deposit box is an inexpensive way to protect your valuable jewellery from those who would steal it.
- Dangerous Activities – There are some activities that are just dangerous for diamond wedding rings. Consider removing your jewellery before working in the garden, playing sports or engaging in other activities that could potentially cause problems.
