One of the best things about being a jeweller specializing in designing and creating customized pieces is the ability to please each client with unique pieces that speak to them in personal ways. We love to do so when couples first come to us for custom wedding rings. However, we also appreciate being able to do so for clients looking to transform the old into something new and wonderful.
What do we mean by transforming the old into something new? We mean taking older pieces of jewellery – pieces with strong sentimental value, mind you – and using them to design and create new pieces that are equally valuable. Here are two examples to explain the principle:
New Anniversary Jewellery
Robert and Mary are a middle-aged couple getting ready to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. When they were first looking at diamond engagement rings more than two decades ago, they were on a limited budget and lacked any real knowledge about quality diamond purchases. Now they want to do something different.
They might bring in both wedding rings along with Mary’s original diamond engagement ring so that we can use the pieces to create new anniversary jewellery. Perhaps new earrings for her (using the stones from her original engagement ring) and a new accessory ring for his right hand.
The possibilities here are virtually endless. We can take the older jewellery from 25 years ago and use it to create beautiful new pieces to perfectly complement the new, 25th anniversary wedding bands the couple chooses to purchase.
Rita is a wonderful lady who lost her husband of 37 years after a long illness. Her love for her husband is so profound that she does not want to simply put his wedding band in a drawer and forget about it. Instead, she wants to transform it into new jewellery she can wear proudly.
One option might be to remove the small diamonds in her husband’s wedding band and add them to her diamond engagement ring as subtle accents. The band could then be transformed into a beautiful brooch she can wear close to her heart all the time. Another option is to simply use her husband’s wedding band to create a beautiful necklace that will remind her of her husband often.
Keeping Memories Alive
The point of transforming older pieces of jewellery into new ones is to keep the memories associated with those pieces alive. As you know, jewellery is a very personal thing – especially when you are talking about diamond engagement rings and personalized wedding rings. Both types of jewellery have a special place in the heart because of the meaning behind them.
Do you have older pieces of jewellery with special sentimental value? If so, do you wear those pieces in their current condition? Consider transforming them into new pieces if they are doing nothing more than taking up space in your drawer or jewellery box. Using older jewellery to create new pieces brings new life to the old while keeping the associated memories alive.
