How to Choose the Right Metal
There are many factors you should consider when choosing the type of metal for your engagement or wedding ring.
Here are of the factors you should consider when choosing a metal for your ring.
Her Colour Preference
Does she prefer yellow, white, rose or a variation of tri-coloured tones? For yellow, the only choice available is gold. Depending on the karat purity however, the shade of yellow can vary.
For a pink colour, the only available option is rose gold. Rose-coloured alloys are added to the gold to give it a beautiful and blushing pink colour. If she prefers a white look, there are a few different options available. These include White Gold, Palladium or Platinum.
Take a look at the jewellery she wears. What colour is it? The vast majority of the rings we do are in white gold, palladium, or platinum. But in the end, it is about her personal preference that matters. Take notice.
How Active is Her Lifestyle?
If she is very active and hard on her possessions, you may want to lean towards a more scratch-resistant metal like white gold or palladium. Platinum is more durable however but it does not hold a polish as well and is more likely to scratch.
Cost Differences
Platinum is the most expensive option. On average, you can expect to pay 2 to 2.5 times more for platinum than for the same piece made in white gold. Palladium will be similar in price for the same piece made in white gold.
Does She Have Any Allergies?
If she does, you will have to go with palladium or platinum because these metals are 95% pure and are hypoallergenic. If you are not sure you can always ask her. If she already wears white gold jewellery such as earrings, she likely will have no allergy issues. If there is sensitivity to gold, the allergic response is often avoided the higher the gold karat, 14K or 18K gold usually does the trick.
