What is a Carat?
Carat is a measure of weight, NOT size. Five carats is equivalent to one gram. A 1.00 carat diamond, therefore, is a diamond that weighs 0.20 grams.
Does Size Matter?
It depends. We get a surprising number of ladies that don’t want a big honking rock on their finger. Really, we do.
That said, when diamonds are properly cut, the difference in size isn't very significant unless the difference in carat weight is very big.
For example:
- A 0.50 carat round diamond will typically measure approximately 5.00 mm in diameter.
- A 0.75 carat round diamond will typically measure approximately 6.00 mm in diameter, and
- A 1.00 carat round diamond will typically measure approximately 5.5 mm in diameter.
At our studio, we'll show you the differences in size so you can judge what's appropriate for you.
How Carat Weight Relates to Price
With all of the aspects of the diamond (for example, colour, clarity and cut) being constant, as the carat weight of the diamond increases, the price will increase exponentially.
For example, if a 0.50 carat round diamond sells for $1,500.00 you can expect to pay more than triple that, if it was a 1.00 carat round diamond (with all other qualities being the same).
How to Measure Carat Weight
We use a digitally calibrated carat weight scale to measure a diamond's weight. When you choose your diamond, we’ll weigh it with you to confirm the carat weight.
