Introduction to Stone Setting Options
Playing with different styles of setting stones into a ring can drastically alter the look of a ring. Lifestyle is also a factor that should be taken into consideration when thinking of a stone setting. Some setting styles lend themselves better to not stick out as much for example and are great options for people with active lifestyles.
Prong or Claw set
The most common way center stones are set are in some form of claw-set. Many variations are available in this setting. The number of claws can vary (ie. 4-prong, 6-prong, etc.) and variations will also apply depending on the shape of stone that is being set. Basket-settings which allow the claws to be thinner can also be used. Customization options are even available on how you’d like the prong tips to be finished including rounded tips, flattened tips, bear claws and more. There is always some room we can play with regarding how high or how low a center stone can be set as well.
Bezel
In a bezel, the stone is encased with a rim of metal. This is often a popular option for people with concerns about having their diamond catch onto clothing or people with active lifestyles. Bezel-set stones are typically set lower into rings than other stone setting options.
Semi-bezel
By encasing a stone only partially, a semi-bezel will allow you to view the side of a stone while still providing a lot of the benefits that draw some people to a bezel-set ring.
Pave and Micro-Pave
Commonly used in setting small diamonds, pave-set diamonds are set as closely as possible with each diamond being held by tiny beads of metal. The appearance created resembles a pavement pattern of diamonds which result in a fine shimmering glitter which is simply breathtaking. Even the smallest diamonds (under 1.0mm in diameter) are individually hand-set under a microscope one at a time resulting in some of the finest works around.
Tension
Made popular through modern setting techniques, this setting allows for the diamond to seemingly ‘float’ and shows of the beauty of your diamond from all angles.
Channel
Channel-set diamonds are held securely between two channels of metal without any claws holding the stones in place. Stones can be set as closely as possible or they can even be set with some spacing in-between each stone to create a unique look.
Gypsy
Similar to bezel, gypsy-set stones are completely encased in metal but have to added feature of being completely set-into the metal so that the surface of the stone is flush with the surface of the metal.
Trellis
A more ornate alternative to the traditional claw-set option, the criss-cross of metal allows for a delicate look that adds another dimension to a ring by allowing for a beautiful side profile look.
