With the 2015 summer wedding season winding down, we thought it might be interesting to look back over the last nine months or so to see what predicted trends for 2015 actually came to fruition. Some of what was predicted for this year was spot on while other predictions proved way off.
One prediction that did not quite take off was the emerging trend of the bridal jumpsuit. While some in the bridal fashion world were expecting brides and their bridesmaids to eschew traditional dresses in favour of jumpsuits and two-piece ensembles, the ladies stuck with the dresses they know so well. Oh well, maybe next year. As for the trends that did stick, below are a few of our favourites.
White Glove Wedding
The white glove wedding is not only making a comeback in North America, but it is also now one of the hottest trends in weddings. What is a white glove wedding? It is a very formal affair that includes everything from the traditional dress to an exclusive, formal venue that exudes taste and elegance. Think horse-drawn carriage delivering the newly married couple to the entrance of an exclusive country club or historic castle where the reception guests await. Inside the reception hall, valets escort guests to their seats indicated by custom-made name cards that match the hand-delivered invitations received months earlier.
Photography and weddings go hand-in-hand like beer and hockey. However, what about photography and engagements? A hot trend right now is to have a set of pictures taken within a few days of the couple’s engagement; those pictures are then included with the engagement announcement and wedding invitations. As an added bonus, including engagement photos in your wedding invitations gives guests unable to attend something to remind them to think of you on your wedding day. Photos can be everything from the moment of the proposal to custom engagement rings of brides-to-be.
Planning Apps for Bridesmaids
There is a smartphone app for just about everything else, so why not one to help bridesmaids as they assist with the planning of the wedding? Indeed, planning apps are all the rage these days. You can get simple apps that do the job of the old paper checklist or more complex apps that help you schedule everything while coordinating all of your vendors. It is an easy and convenient way to use technology to make planning easier.
Homegrown and Locally Sourced
Today’s couples are more conscious than ever before about topics such as sustainability and economic equality. This consciousness is borne out in wedding trends by way of more couples choosing homegrown and locally sourced elements. They may choose a caterer who only uses locally sourced ingredients obtained from organic sources. They may choose non-traditional wildflower arrangements from a local grower. Simply put, they focus on homegrown and sustainable simplicity rather than glitz and glamour.
The Princess and Her Prince
The popularity of ‘Downton Abbey’ and Britain’s latest royal couple (Kate and William) has led to resurgence in ‘Princess and her Prince’ weddings. Think royal colour schemes, fine china settings, and string quartets entertaining guests during an elegant, catered banquet meal. If Cinderella were real, she would fit right in.
His and Her Engagement Rings
Lastly, the trend of buying him an engagement ring that matches hers did not start in 2015, but it has picked up steam. Couples are now more apt to purchase ring sets consisting of four pieces, customized in very personal ways. It is a trend we are happy to be part of at Engage Diamond Studio.
