The last thing you need in the months and weeks leading up to your wedding is unnecessary tension. Every marriage counselor will tell you to avoid tension at any cost, yet it is impossible to escape it completely. We have a way you can introduce some very good tension to your relationship – tension that could bring you joy and pleasure throughout many years of wedded bliss. Of course, we are referring to tension set engagement rings.
If you do not know what a tension ring is, the concept is fairly simple. Rather than utilize a metal setting to hold the diamond in place, a tension ring uses pressure. The diamond is set between the two opposing faces of the upper band and held secure by the natural forces of physics. A tension ring made with high quality materials and a good design can last forever.
The first tension rings were produced in the 1960s. However, they did not go very far because the materials and designs were not there to create quality pieces. However, in the 1990s, tension rings made a big comeback thanks to creative designers who figured out how to make the concept work.
The diamond is the centerpiece of any ring, but especially the diamond engagement ring. Therefore, it stands to reason that the focus of the setting is to be on the diamond. The more attention-grabbing, eye-popping presentation you can come up with, the more stunningly beautiful the diamond becomes. Enter the tension ring.
A tension ring is unique in that it allows the maximum amount of light to shine through the stone from nearly every angle. This is the main selling point for this type of setting. Light equals beauty, and the tension ring does not have the metal setting to interfere with light passing through the stone.
It doesn’t hurt that the tension design looks chic and stylish as well. It is a great look for that up and coming couple that prefers to live outside the confines of tradition in favor of entertaining the cutting edge. The tension ring offers the perfect balance between the beauty of the diamond and avant-garde statement of going with something completely different.
Important Things to Know
Beauty and styling aside, it pays to be very discriminating when shopping for tension rings. It will be worth it in the long run to spend some time looking and a little bit of extra money for the highest quality piece. To that end, there are some important things to know:
•Hardness – Tension settings can put as much as 12,000 pounds per square inch of pressure on a gemstone. Therefore, a hardness rating of 9.0 should be the minimum for your stone.
•Clarity – The clarity of a gemstone is partly determined by the number of interior inclusions. These inclusions reduce the overall strength of the stone. As a general rule, a stone with high clarity is also very strong. Look for VS2 or better.
•Metals – Metals such as gold, silver, and platinum can be used, and require more volume to create the necessary tension.
Tension rings are stunning when created with the proper care. They offer the ideal way for you to add some tension to your relationship without spoiling it. You might also consider the tension setting for other rings as well. At Engage Diamond Studio, we are proud to carry a full selection of tension rings from Gelin Abaci. Stop in and see us in Toronto.
